REGISTRATION for Nelson Mandela Bay’s unique aQuellé Ocean Racing Series has opened ahead of Season XI starting in early October.
The only Series of its kind in Africa, the Ocean Racing SeriesG, has become the continent’s largest family beach event with Series members being given the opportunity to take part in any one of 7 different events each race day.
The Series takes part throughout the whole of Summer, mostly on alternate Sunday mornings, from Port Elizabeth’s Hobie Beach, and includes a 1km, 2km and 3km Ocean Swim, a 5km Beach Run, 5km Beach Walk and a 1km Beach Run/Walk for children 12 years and under.
For the fourth year running the organisers have opted to keep entry fees the same despite all the rising costs including having to pay a controversial beach hire fee of around R1 800 per morning to help boost the city as Africa’s water sport capital. The Series not only attracts some of the Eastern Cape’s top competitive and social open water swimmers and trail runners, but also includes the Masakhane Future Stars Development Trust, a programme backed by Pagden’s Attorneys, Willard Batteries and Caltex Eastern Cape, to ensure children from the disadvantaged communities are given the opportunity to take part regularly in key Metro events.
In a massive boost to the Series, this will be KwaZulu-Natal-based natural spring water bottler, aQuellé’s, second season as naming sponsor, ensuring that local non-profit company Zsports, owners of the Series, are able to build on the successes of previous seasons and continue the growth of the Series.
Registration and other information on the Series are available on the website www.OceanRacingSeries.com. Season XI will be launched with a registration function at the News Cafe on Friday, October 9, where all registered participants will each receive a registration pack with a Series XI t-shirt, drawstring bag and a Series cap.
