A 30-year-old gang member from Arcadia, in Port Elizabeth, was on Wednesday handed a lengthy jail sentence by the Port Elizabeth High Court, which convicted him on charges of murder, illegal possession of a firearm and illegal possession of ammunition.
According to police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, Calvin Busten, alias Kalahaan, was sentenced to 25 years for murder; five years for illegal possession of firearm and one year for illegal possession of ammunition. The sentences will run concurrently.
“On 12 January this year, the deceased, Christian Edward (27) and friends were sitting in a shack at the side of a house in Gentian Street in Arcadia Bethelsdorp when the accused stormed in by kicking open the door.
“The accused asked for Edward and fatally shot him three times,” described Colonel Naidu.
“Busten was arrested by the Provincial Gang Investigation Unit on 2 February at his house in Jenniker Street, Bethelsdorp. He remained in custody until the finalisation of the case.”
He is a member of the G-Stars gang, which is an affiliate of the Spotbouer gang.
The ruling comes after the Port Elizabeth High Court on Tuesday sentenced another two gangsters to life plus 40 years imprisonment for the murder of two-year-old Caydene Ruiters last year.
