ORLANDO Pirates were beaten 3-1 by Recreativo do Libolo of Angola in their African Champions League opener at Nelson Mandela Bay stadium yesterday.
The visitors were 2-0 up by the 16th minute of the first half.
Those two goals came courtesy of Maieco Domingos Henrique in the 12th and 16th minutes.
Henri Camara scored just after the hour mark, taking the visitors to 3-0 to seal the win over SA’s premier league champions.
However, Pirates’ Rooi Mahamutsa scored a consolation goal for the Buccaneers deep into injury time to salvage some pride for the men from Soweto.
n Maritzburg United conceded two late goals to go down 2-0 to Ajax Cape Town in their premiership match at Harry Gwala s tadium in Pietermaritzburg yesterday.
In a game Maritzburg dominated, they were made to rue a number of missed chances and were punished by the clinical Ajax finish late in the second half.
A goal apiece from George Akpabio in the 78th minute and Khama Billiat two minutes from time sealed an encounter that had not looked like producing a goal.
With the midseason break still seemingly having an effect on the teams, both sides struggled to find rhythm in the opening exchanges.
The second half saw little in the way of goal chances until Akpabio intervened 12 minutes from time. Akpabio was on the end of a lofted ball over the Maritzburg defence as he controlled the ball well and slotted home the opener.
He was involved in the second goal from an Ajax counterattack. Maritzburg hit the post and the visitors moved the ball quickly to the other end of the pitch, with Akpabio providing the cross for Billiat, who rifled his shot into the back of the net for a resounding 2-0 victory.
