The Democratic Alliance in Nelson Mandela Bay (NMB) welcomes the sentencing of Andile Lungisa to 2 years in prison, following the assault of DA Councillor Rano Kayser in a council meeting in October 2016.
Andile Lungisa, an African National Congress Councillor (ANC), was found guilty of assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm after he smashed a glass jug filled with water over Cllr Kayser’s head during a NMB council meeting in October 2016.
The magistrate handed down a sentence of three years imprisonment, with one year suspended.
It is important that Public Representatives who are found guilty of brutality and criminality are appropriately held accountable.
The sentence passed down conveys the right message that those who commit crime, even Councillors, will be held to account.
I commend the courts for taking Mr Lungisa to task and imposing an appropriate sentence. I trust the rest of the ANC Caucus will take note that, even though the majority party takes a lenient view on criminality, accountability still exists in South Africa and the rule of law applies.
