The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality received a call from Eskom at 13:00 today (Friday, 21 November 2014) to implement load shedding.
The Municipality began load shedding in terms of the schedule – Group 3 (Uitenhage, Summerstrand, South End) was switched off at 13:15; they will be switched back on between 14:00 and 14:30; Group 4 will be switched off at 14:00; and the rest of the groups will be shed in accordance with the schedule which is available on the NMBM website www.nelsonmandelabay.gov.za
Update: Eskom has upgraded nation-wide load shedding from Stage 1 to Stage 2 and expects it to last until 20:00 on Friday and possibly over the weekend.
Various reasons caused the decision to kick off with load shedding: Firstly, there were issues with water levels at water management plants at the Drakensberg and Palmiet power generation stations and secondly, there were technical faults at various power stations, including boiler tube leaks.
Three schedules have been developed:
- Stage 1 allows for up to 1000 MW of the national load to be shed.
- Stage 2 allows for up to 2000 MW of the national load to be shed.
- Stage 3 allows for up to 4000 MW of the national load to be shed.
- Load shedding will be implemented in most instances in 2 hour blocks (with an additional 30 minutes for switching between blocks) during the period 05:00 to 21:30. You therefore may be without electricity for 2,5 hours
