Irate members call for regional task team to be scrapped
Deep divisions and factional battles within the ANC in Nelson Mandela Bay were laid bare yesterday as members, claiming to represent 48 branches in the city, called for the President Jacob Zuma-appointed regional task team (RTT) to be disbanded.
The group blamed the RTT for the ANC’s recent loss of the Bay municipality to the DA-led coalition government.
Under the RTT, the ANC had died, the group, led by former ANC councillor and regional treasurer Wandisile Jikeka, said.
At a press conference in Zinyoka township, the group lashed out at the RTT, saying its members were power-hungry and causing divisions in the branches in the Bay.
The RTT was constituted by Zuma to take over the leadership in the region after the regional executive committee was disbanded in January last year.
It is led by Vuyani Limba as regional convener and Beza Ntshona as the coordinator.
About 200 ANC members gathered at the community hall near Missionvale, backing the statement read by Jikeka.
