Amatola Water wishes to correct the misinformation and distortion of facts published in a letter to the Editor of myportelizabeth.co.za, titled ‘Amatola Water Board chairperson Nokulunga Mnqetha must go, as written by Veliswa Mvenya on 31 August 2017. (See: Amatola Water Board chairperson Nokulunga Mnqetha must go)
Amatola Water views the allegations expressed by Ms. Mvenya in a serious light and would like to set the record straight on the following issues raised in her letter:
Water Services Infrastructure Grant Drought Relief Intervention
The drought relief intervention is a joint programme of the Department of Water Sanitation (DWS) and COGTA.
The disbursement of the water services infrastructure grant is the responsibility of the Department of Water Sanitation through COGTA. The conditions for use of this grant as well as the duties of municipalities in utilizing the funds are set out in the Division of Revenue Act of 2008 (DoRA).
The drought relief intervention does not fall within the current DWS funded projects that Amatola Water is implementing.
The water board currently has no involvement whatsoever in the drought relief intervention. It has not received any drought relief funds, and is in no way responsible for ensuring the utilization of the said grant funding, as claimed in the letter.
Chairperson Appointment Fraud Allegations
It must be noted that the appointment of the Amatola Water Chairperson remains the prerogative of the Minister of Water Sanitation. The Minister has reiterated that the incumbent is innocent unless proven guilty by a judicial process.
Until this process takes place, the current appointment, remains in place, notwithstanding the allegations against the Chairperson, which are in no way related to the Amatola Water Board.
Amatola Water’s Commitment to Service Delivery
As the provider of bulk-water services to a number of municipalities in the Province, Amatola Water remains committed to ensuring the highest standards of service delivery. Furthermore, it will continue to provide the exceptional service to which its stakeholders are accustomed, with no disruption of services in all its operations.
Amatola Water strongly refutes the allegations purported in Ms. Mvenya’s letter and regards the misrepresentation of facts as a malicious intent to inflict damage to its reputation, as she has not made any effort to solicit a response from the organisation on the matter.
