PORT ELIZABETH — Ajax Cape Town upset Kaizer Chiefs 1-0 in Port Elizabeth on Saturday in the final of the first of three annual South African cup football competitions.
The MTN 8 Cup, played between the top eight finishers from the previous league season, was won by a goal from veteran striker Nathan Paulse at a packed 45,000-capacity Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.
He was fouled on 55 minutes and converted the resultant penalty, firing past stationary Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune.
Ajax, who had a goal disallowed for offside and were foiled by the woodwork, fully deserved a first success in the competition.
Favourites Chiefs were generally second to the ball and created only one clearcut chance with Finnish goalkeeper Anssi Jaakkola saving superbly from Zimbabwean Willard Katsande at the death.
Victory made Ajax R8m richer in the winners-take-all competition.
