Kaizer Chiefs retained their 10 point advantage at the top of the Absa Premiership table after the latest set of games in midweek, when rivals Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates both slipped up.
Amakhosi moved to 50 points for the season with nine games to play after edging out Ajax Cape Town 1-0 at FNB Stadium.
The only goal was scored by Mandla Masango (14) early on as Amakhosi warmed up nicely for the weekend derby at the same Soweto venue on Saturday.
Their opponents for the weekend, the Buccaneers, meanwhile failed to get the desired result and in fact could have been beaten by a plucky Free State Stars, who held the Orlando club to a 1-1 draw in Phuthaditjhaba.
Pirates had started the game like a house on fire thanks to an early goal from Kermit Erasmus (8). But Ea Lla Koto plugged away and were rewarded with a Moeketsi Sekola (38) equaliser, before ending the game much stronger at the Charles Mopeli Stadium.
Stars stayed 13 as a result, while the solitary point left the Bucs in fourth place, but now 14 points adrift of the leaders with a total of 36.
Sandwiched in between them are Sundowns and Bidvest Wits, who climbed to second by surprising the defending champions with a 1-0 win in Johannesburg.
The only goal was scored by their talisman Sibusiso Vilakazi (77) with 13 minutes to play as the Students took their tally to 40 points, three more than the Brazilians.
Finally, Polokwane City managed to leapfrog Ajax after they scored a late goal to snatch a 1-1 draw against Chippa United at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.
Mhlengi Cele (53) had put the hosts on track for a first win under Ernst Middeendorp with his opener, but Jabulani Maluleke (83) struck with time running out to give the Limpopo side a point.
They continue to maintain their solid position in the league and now have 29 points, while the Chilli Boys stayed 11th.
