The Boardwalk answered the call for assistance from the Little Honey Bees Early Education and Aftercare Centre at AGS Church in Young Park. The centre caters for young learners from informal settlements and relies solely on the support it receives from the public and concerned companies. It has grown considerably since inception and with the start of the school year has come a great demand for resources. Recognising the plight of the centre, and inspired by the work it does to support its community, the Boardwalk has donated over R15 000 worth of educational toys, chair, tables, mattress and towels to Little Honey Bees.
“Education is the cornerstone of economic and social wellbeing. We recognise however, that many parents and schools in our community are unable to afford the educational tools and equipment to empower effective learning. Furthermore, many working parents are unable to afford proper aftercare for their children in the afternoons.
“Little Honey Bees provides an invaluable to the community by offering parents a safe and value adding child care alternative. The Boardwalk is pleased to be in a position to make donations of this nature in order to contribute to the education of underprivileged children in Port Elizabeth,” says the Boardwalk’s new General Manager, Mike van Vuuren.
Little Honey Bees was established in 2012 to address the need for safe, nurturing and affordable child care for young children from surrounding informal settlements. A non-profit organization, Little Honey Bees is located on the church premises and accommodates children aged from two to seven years on a daily basis. The centre provides three meals a day and stimulating, educational activities for the children in a caring environment.
Bettie Scholtz, Project manager at Honey Bees says: “We help parents who are unable to afford school and aftercare fees for their children. We are enormously grateful for the donations we receive. Every bit helps to ensure that we can continue to help young families in need.”
