Police have returned 99 sheep stolen from a farm outside Mthatha on Saturday to their rightful owner.
Police spokesman, Lt Col Sibongile Soci, said Bityi police members had responded to a telephone complaint laid by the owner from the Moyeni locality, Mqhekezweni A/A, in Bityi, at 3am on Saturday morning.
All 99 sheep were recovered from where they had been hidden in nearby mealie-fields.
Soci urged community members to be vigilant when they heard unusual noises in their homesteads, and called on them to report missing stock immediately.
“We also call on stock owners to count their stock regularly. It is important that stock owners “brand” their livestock. This becomes very crucial in identifying recovered stock and for court proceedings,” she said.
Soci said it was also important that stock owners complied with the Stock Theft Act and ensured that the necessary documentation is issued when stock is sold and transported. These documents can be obtained from local police stations.
