25 162 football fans were treated to a feast of goals on Sunday 20 July 2014 at Port Elizabeth‘s Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in the club friendly between Chippa United and Kaizer Chiefs.
The tiny Chippa fan contingent (could it have been 162?) had reason to celebrate in the 4th minute as Chippa captain and striker, Andile Mbenyana, left Itumeleng Khune, the Kaizer Chiefs captain, floundering to slot the first goal of the day.
Chiefs were not taking this lying down and Kingston Nkatha found the net just 3 minutes later to even the score.
A penalty against Chippa in the 12th minute saw the score at 2-1 when Chiefs Siphiwe Tshabalala slotted an easy kick.
Chippa’s David Zulu added one goal to his personal tally in the 20th minute and evened the scores up again.
A Tshabalala missed penalty (and great save by Tsepo Motsoeneng) in the 33rd minute saw both teams end the first half on 2 goals apiece.
Back out for the second half Chippa seemed to have lost a bit of attacking momentum up front as Chiefs attempted to hit the back of the net with far more possession than in the 1st half.
Eventually Chiefs sealed the end of Chippas hopes of winning with two goals in the second half from: Tefu Mashamaite in the 49th minute and a bonus goal in the 92nd minute from George Maluleka.
If only those three minutes of stoppage time had not been added the scores would have been a far better reflection of the game on the day.
Final score: Chippa United 2 (2) – Kaizer Chiefs 4 (2)
- Chippa United: Andile Mbenyana, David Zulu
- Kaizer Chiefs: Kingston Nkatha, Siphiwe Tshabalala (penalty), Tefu Mashamaite, George Maluleka
