24 Laptops bring joy to local school pupils

27 November 2017 By MyPortElizabeth

Quality of teaching and learning was given a major boost today, November 27, 2017 when the Executive Mayor of Nelson Mandela Bay, Cllr Athol Trollip, led a Taiwanese senior government delegation in handing over 24 laptops donated by the Ministry of Foreign Affiars, Republic of China (Taiwan) to the Adolph Schauder Primary School in Schaudervile and the Molefe Primary School in New Brighton.

The donation is the culmination of an approach by the Speaker of Council, Councillor Jonathan Lawack to officials from the Taiwanese Embassy of while attending a work related workshop in Cape Town earlier this year.

“While in Cape Town the Taiwanese embassy was donating a truck load of wheelchairs to the City of Cape Town to distribute to the needy. I approached them to also assist Nelson Mandela Bay. They did not only agree to sponsoring a truck load of wheelchairs, they went an extra mile by donating 24 laptops to two schools in our disadvantaged communities. Today I am over the moon that we are here to hand over these laptops,” said a visibly pleased Councillor Lawack. Both schools received 12 laptops each.

Speaking at the hand-over event held at the Adolph Schauder Primary School, Executive Mayor Trollip called upon teachers and learners to protect the laptops and make sure that they are not misused. “The relationship that we have established with the Taiwanese is very important. It focuses on improving the quality of education for our children, which guarantees the future of this City. On behalf of the City, I would like to thank the people of Taiwan and the delegation for bringing this much-needed assistance.”

Leader of the delegation Dean Wang, said his country was committed to the improvement of the quality of education in Nelson Mandela Bay. “Education is the pillar to a country’s development. For my country to be given the honour to assist in improving education, is humbling. We hope to be in a position to assist more needy schools and people in general throughout Nelson Mandela Bay,” said Mr Wang.

“The gift of laptops will definitely improve the quality of our education in our school. We will look after them so that they can benefit as many learners of possible. Thank you to the team work between the Municipality and the Taiwanese government. We are really at a loss for words to express our gratitude,” said learner Leigh-Ora Groenewald.
