The Longhair and I have made the annual pilgrimage to the beachfront almost every year since 2004 – celebrating the start of a new South African year with our fellow Africans who swarm the beachfront to braai and swim in a ritual as old as me at least.
Initially our forays to the beach were met with shock, gasp and horror reactions from our family and ex-friends.
But, over the years we have taken our walk and greeted our fellow citizens whilst steadily noticing the normalisation of the crowds who flock to our magnificent beachfront and engage in some meaningful conversation. Of course the day does bring some guys who have really earnest conversations whilst trying to keep their rolling eyes and patch of ground upon which they stand still!
For me, 2016 New Year is epitomised in this photograph as we wandered along Hobie Beach with nieces in tow.
