Uitenhage Traffic Department Kingpin Dismissed After Irregularities are Exposed
The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s Traffic and Licensing Sub-directorate dismissed Dennis Januarie, a Principal Clerk in charge of driver’s licences at the Uitenhage Traffic Department, after he was found guilty of gross misconduct. Januarie was found guilty of sixteen incidents of gross dishonesty, for amongst others giving his subordinates instructions to perform illegal transactions and a charge of gross negligence in that he failed to perform his duties diligently, carefully and to the best of his ability. Petrol and Gas Up, Diesel and Paraffin Down
The retail price of all grades of petrol is to increase by 34 cents per litre on Wednesday next week. The Department of Energy said on Friday that the price of 0.05% sulphur diesel and 0.005% sulphur diesel will go down by 1 and 2 cents per litre respectively. Wholesale paraffin will drop by 3 cents a litre and the price of illuminating paraffin (SMNRP) will decrease by 4 cents per litre. There will be also be a 50 cents per kilogram increase in the maximum retail price for LPGAS. The department said that during the period under review, the average international product prices of petrol, diesel and illuminating paraffin increased. The average rand/US dollar exchange rate for the period 29 December 2011 to 26 January 2012 strengthened to 8.0841 compared to 8.2122 during the previous period. … [Read More...]

Firefighters battle, extinguish PE mall fire
2012-01-26 22:10 Johannesburg - A raging fire at Greenacres mall, in Port Elizabeth, was extinguished on Thursday after damaging 26 shops, the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality said. "Rescue pumps were dispatched and arrived within minutes after an emergency call was received from Greenacres Security at 03:30," said spokesperson Kupido Baron in a statement. "The fire in Checkers was contained and the hardworking firemen and women ensured that it did not spread to other parts of the centre," he said. The Southern Kings’ place in the Vodacom Super Rugby competition in 2013 was reaffirmed at a Special Council Meeting of the South African Rugby Union (SARU) in Cape Town on Friday. South Africans are being asked to send in their tips on what they would like to see in the country’s budget, said National Treasury on Thursday. Gordhan is due to present the national budget on 22 February. Busy Day for NMBM Firefighters
The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s Fire Department had their hands full yesterday wIth their first 6 engine call at 3:20 am to contain a raging fire at the well-known Greenacres Shopping Centre which resulted in extensive fire damage to the Checkers portion of the building, smoke damage to neighbouring line shops and the closing of 26 shops for business. At this stage the centre is open for business and assessments are underway to see how best to ensure that the 26 shops that were closed can open again to ensure continuous trade.
